What is Hajj and Importance of Hajj (Pilgrimage)


The Hajj is the annual pilgrimage of the Muslims towards the city of Makkah. The meaning of the word “Hajj “is to make a visit to something.
Hajj is one of the fifth pillars of Islam. One who is financially or physically able, it is necessary for him or her to visit Kabbah for the Hajj ceremony. According to the Hadith and Surah of the Quran, the Hajj is an essential obligation for those who have the capacity.
Dhu al-Hijjah is an important month in which the ceremony of Hajj takes place. The religious rituals of the Hajj ceremony start from 8th to 12 or 13th Dhu al-Hijjah.
Hajj is one of the biggest human gatherings of the human on earth. Around 2 or 3 million attends the Hajj ceremony.

What is Hajj and why is it important?

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. The history of Hajj is a compelling one. Islam obligates Muslims to perform Hajj at least once in their lifetime, provided they can afford it and are physically able. It is the annual pilgrimage to Makkah carried out by Muslims. The performance of pilgrimage requires believers to perform the religious rites prescribed for Hajj. How is Hajj performed? Muslims must perform the rites of Hajj in the way Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) specified, as Allah revealed Islam through His Prophet (PBUH).

Ibrahim (AS) built the Kaaba

The pilgrimage originated in the time of Ibrahim (AS). Allah assigned him and his son, Ismail (AS), the responsibility of building the Kaaba in Makkah. Allah categorically forbade the association of partners with Him in worship.

Hajr E Aswad Or The Black Stone Of Kaaba

A common query is: Where did the Black Stone come from? According to a Hadith in Sunan An-Nasa’i, the Black Stone originates from Heaven. The Hajr e Aswad is a sacred stone from ancient times. It is placed 1.5 meters above the ground in the Eastern corner of the Holy Kaaba in Makkah. It is an essential part of the Kaaba. The Kaaba is what the Muslims face during their daily prayers. It is also a central part of Hajj, as Muslims circumambulate the Kaaba several times during the pilgrimage.

In a Hadith in Sahih Muslim, Jaabir ibn Abdullah (r.a.) narrated that when the Prophet (PBUH) came to Makkah, he touched Hajr-e-Aswad first before performing Tawaaf around the Kaaba.

Blessings And Importance Of Hajj In Islam

In the month of Dhu al-hijja, Muslims perform Hajj, which is one of the essential pillars of Islam. Hajj performs in the holy city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
It is one of the essential duties of Muslims to perform Hajj if they are financially and physically capable of performing Hajj. The meaning of the Words” hajj “is of visiting someplace. In this sense, we can take the Hajj as the visit of” Kabah” the house of Allah.
In Hajj, Muslims perform different religious rituals from 8th Dhu al-hijjah to 12th. Dhu al-hijjah is the last month of the Islamic calendar.
The gathering of Hajj is the second-largest gathering in the Muslims world after Arbaeen pilgrimage of Karbala, Iraq.


Hadith about Hajj, the 5th pillar of Islam

In a Sahih Hadith found in Bukhari and Muslim, the Prophet (PBUH) said that the five pillars, which are the Shahadah (testimony of faith), Salah, Zakat, Hajj, and fasting. This is the opener from amongst the ten hadith about Hajj. It illustrates that traveling to the holy city of Mecca to perform pilgrimage is an obligation on every adult Muslim. That is to say, those who have the health and resources should perform Hajj once in their lifetime.
